Babies Curriculum

Intent

In the baby room we aim to support the children in the 3 prime areas and teach them the foundations of skills they need to further their development. We would like the babies to be confident in expressing their wants and needs. We will model the core British values, being kind, sharing, and following very basic rules and routine. We will encourage the babies to be independent during mealtimes and give them lots of opportunities to practise their physical skills. We aim for the babies to be settled and confident around staff and their peers, ready for their transition into the Toddler room where they will explore wider areas of development.

Those children with a particular need including SEND, are supported appropriately allowing them to be successful.

Implementation

In the baby room staff will provide lots of opportunities for the children to express their own interests. Staff will model play along side the babies and give children opportunities to lead play using their own ideas. Staff will model language, use gestures and give children lots of time to process instructions and questions. Staff will model kind behaviour and encourage the children to be confident, respectful, caring and loving towards each together. The children will have access to outdoors each day where they will learn to take risks and develop their physical skills. Staff will provide planned activities for each individual child taking into consideration their baseline and summative assessments, and continually observe and assess them to ensure they are progressing through their developmental milestones. Each term the staff will have a meeting and compare each child’s summative assessment, planning activities to fill any gaps. As children are getting ready to move on to the next room, staff will start taster sessions and accompany the child in their new environment, letting the child take the lead and settle into their new room in their own time.

Impact

We hope for the children to move through to the toddler room with the confidence to explore their new surroundings and able to create new bonds with staff and peers. The babies will understand a simple routine and will be able to follow basic nursery rules. The babies will have the skills to express their wants and needs and be physically able to explore their new environment with adult support.

SEND children will continue to receive support in line with the SEND code of practise and have an in-depth hand over to their new keyworker, with an extended transition period if needed.
