Toddle In Cirriculum

Toddlers Cirriculum

Intent

In the toddler room we aim to support the children in beginning to communicate with adults and friends and be able to express their wants and needs. Whilst teaching them how to be kind, respectful, confident and have consideration for others, we will help them to be ready to form meaningful relationships and have self-confidence ready for moving up into the Tykes room, where they will become more independent and be ready to explore wider areas of learning. We aim for the children to be able to use the potty independently, taking off and putting on loose clothing including shoes and require little adult support during meal times.
Those children with additional needs including SEND, are supported appropriately allowing them to be successful.

Implementation

In the toddler room staff will provide lots of talking opportunities including 1:1 talking time and group time. We will model language, use gestures, and give children lots of time to process instructions and questions. This will give children the opportunity to develop their language and understanding. We will model kind behaviour and encourage the children to be respectful, caring and loving towards each other, whilst teaching them to be confident. We respect the children’s own thoughts and views and follow their lead during play. We will provide well planned learning activities, taking into consideration each child’s baseline assessments ad individual interests. There will be opportunities during play for the children to practise dressing and undressing, such as dressing up in role play and taking off/ putting on shoes throughout our daily routine. During mealtimes the staff will allow the children to independently feed themselves. The children will have lots of opportunities each day to practise their fine and gross motor skills both indoors and out. Staff will attend termly room meetings to look at the children’s progress as a whole and individually then plan relevant activities to continue to support their development. As children are getting ready to move into the Tykes room, staff will accompany the child on a taster session in their new room and encourage them to create bonds with their new staff and peers.

Impact

We hope the children move up to Tykes with the confidence to explore their new surroundings and understand they are respected, and their opinion is valued, whilst understanding simple rules and boundaries and having respect for their environment and others. We want them to have the skills to be able to use language to express themselves, being able to take part in group times and meaningful conversations. The children will have the basic foundations to enable them to move on to new challenges and learning opportunities to continue their learning journey.

SEND children will continue to receive support inline with the SEND code of practise and have an in-depth handover to their new keyworker, with an extended transition period if needed.
